“LUISA FERNANDA ESPINDOLA SCARPETTA - TALENT THAT COMES BACK HOME
In a special screening, during the International Film Festival in Bogotá, the Lumiére Theater presented Maria and Re-encounters, two short films produced in Rumania, written and directed by Sophia-Louise Espindola von Wrangell, (then Luisa Fernanda Espindola Scarpetta).
“Maria” is a story of light and shadows, of illusion and destruction, a confrontation between life and death. In reality, Maria is a poem in black and white.
In "Reencounters" (color), Sophia-Louise von Wrangell presents herself as a total artist: she is actress, editor, screenwriter, and director. The argument: Only the delusional goes back to accomplish the promise of a re-encounter.
The Bogotá Film Festival has shown that we have among us a new Colombian talent, a great asset to the national cinema.”

November 2006 Butterfly, a Cinematic painting was finalized.
Sophia has dedicated the last 7 years to writing screenplays for films she wants to direct, and to develop subconscious art techniques and techniques of subconscious story-telling to open channels for everyone to inhabit the right side of their brains, the creative, and the intuitive. As a result, Sophia has created a new Art Genre: Cinematic Paintings. These are four dimensional, organic animated paintings for the screen, multimedia creations that include oil painting, photography, cyber art, film editing, and music.
“In a group, the effects of this technique are electrifying. In one session of subconscious story-telling, a cinematic painting* three and a half minutes long, succeeded in keeping a miscellaneous group of people “engaged” during six hours. All communication barriers were torn aside. There was a lot of observation, and judgment was set aside for the duration. Differences in gender, race, socio-economic level, age, and education became irrelevant. At the subconscious level, we all knew everything. Our perceptions were, by their own unique nature, unequivocal. There, we all felt valid.”
During the very first session, I have a remarked increase in people’s creative thinking. Some reported joyful esoteric sensations. For some it was a form of meditation: “My mind tried to grab onto something and finally let go”. A third found the solution for a long-standing problem, realizing it had been there all along. A couple of days later, one person obtained a raise in salary for offering a surprisingly beneficial solution to a business problem. All felt enriched in an intangible and very real way.”
October 6, 2006 Participated in Arts Walk, Olympia in two venues: Swing and Plenty’s .
On Friday, November 11th, 2005 “The Lovers” second Cinematic painting in the novel technique that Sophia calls Cinematic Art, was completed. The soundtrack, subconscious improvisation was a collaboration between Michael Vlatkovich, Jim Knodle, and Sophia. Ben Dobyns edited the piece.
December 2004 created a new art company, “Sophia’s Galaxy”.
On Friday, September 23rd, 2005, “The Desert Woman” the first four-dimensional painting of the triptych, finally reached completion. In November 2004, Sophia conceived and created the first of a series of “Moving Visions”, animated four-dimensional paintings, “The Desert Woman”. In August 2005, in collaboration with Charles Willyard and Robert Jorgensen, both consummate musicians, Sophia improvised the musical track for this unique piece. It is innovative music, with a primeval character to it that superbly matches the flow of images. Last, but not least, film director and producer Ben Dobbins perfected the editing and the mix and created the accompanying menu for the DVD.

“Subconscious Painting: oil on wood”
This workshop is designed to open a passage between the conscious and subconscious, to enable you to tap into your inner (re-) sources.
You will enter a dimension out of space and time transposing your inner meaning into your painting, and have a lot of fun with the process. Then you will consciously see what you have brought from ‘your other side’. At this level, barriers vanish. I will facilitate this passage, maintaining a supportive atmosphere while teaching about color composition, technique, balance, and harmony. Welcome to your artistic Self. No previous training and no fear necessary.
This is from one of her students:
I highly recommend the “Subconscious Painting Workshop” with Sophia-Louise von Wrangell to everyone with an interest in self-knowledge, expression, and the arts in general. I am 39 years old and hadn’t had an art course since elementary school, but thanks to the guidance and support from Sophia, I have discovered that I am, in fact, a painter. In the past six months under Sophia’s tutelage I have created over a dozen paintings and have had one exhibit. More importantly I have found out a lot about myself. I am “seeing” the work and myself in a new way. Her workshops teach one to look into the art rather than at it.
I have been a writer and theatre artist for 20 years, but working in a nonverbal form has opened up channels of expression that went dormant long ago. I believe that doing subconscious painting is beneficial and healing in ways that affect my entire life. Sophia-Louise von Wrangell has aided me in further knowing and trusting myself as an artist, and ultimately, as a human being.
Warmly,
Sky Myers,
Play writer, 38 Olympia, Washington June 24, 2003

The EdgeWork website introduces Sophia-Louise’s workshop in Dramaturgy of the Short Film Screenplay for directors and writers, with the following words: “We are proud to present Sophia-Louise von Wrangell’s acclaimed course in visual storytelling…” www.EdgeWork.com February 15, 2002.
A student at this workshop wrote:
"Learning to visualize for film is only the first step for an aspiring Screenwriter/ Director.
Using a unique language she developed in her own work, Sophia-Louise von Wrangell writes only what is to be visually seen in a film, and using her extensive grasp of symbolism, that which is unseen is also expressed. She has a gift for finding the problem areas of a script (in structure, rhythm, intention) and she skillfully solves them.
I first met Sophia-Louise earlier this year when I attended her workshop, “Dramaturgy of Film”, at the Moondance festival in my hometown, Boulder, CO.
Her energetic charisma immediately captured everyone’s attention, and her insight was only surpassed by her good humor.
The class was large, yet each person was given the chance to voice their script ideas and receive her feedback. She left the entire group inspired and craving more.
I, personally, was so impressed with her knowledge that I picked up and followed her to Olympia, WA, graciously accepting a position as her apprentice. It was a decision that is proving to be monumental in my artistic development and a delightful experience."

Zeit Ohne Schatten
(Time without Shadows) that came out under the title "Zugvogel ... einmal Nach Inari" (Train Roses, in English). Peter Lichtefeld directed. Awarded the German Silber Bear, Berlinale 1997. This is what the German Press wrote about it and is pertinent to the screenplay, which Sophia wrote under the name Luisa Roger in the New York Times Writer’s Pick:
"A genial mixture of twisted thriller and laconic love story. A journey of lunatics, with the perfect connections. Hannes Weber (Joachim Kröl) is a passionate fan of train connections. Commissar Fank pursues him as a murder suspect. It is known that love falls from heaven. If someone would have told Hannes, the delivery man for a beer company, that he would find it in the exotic loneliness of Finland; and that a detective, obsessed with his capture is stepping on his heels to accuse him of murder, he would have just shaken his head, incredulous. In his journey, Hannes sees himself mixed in the criminal activities of a band of falsifiers. Furthermore, he meets Sirpa (Outi Maenpaa), a Finnish woman lover of roses and falls in love with her - but lets her go. They all meet in Inari: Hannes, Sirpa and ...commissar Fank!
Migartory Birds combines a tender love story with a dark comedy and a poetic railroad movie. It is a strange Journey to the end of the world.
Hannes:- When is it most beautiful in Finland?
Sirpa: - The Rushka. You see how the forest explodes in every color. And then comes the snow, and the sun descends further and further. And you turn more and more quiet, and then comes the time without shadows.
Hannes:- Do you mean... when there is light night and day?
Sirpa: - No, the never ending darkness.
Hannes:- Eternal gloom. Isn't that terrible?
Sirpa: - Yes, it is heavy on your soul.
Hannes:- Is it also like this in Inari?
Sirpa: - Yes. Inari is the end of the world. That's where you are heading for isn't it?
Hannes:- Yes. By the quickest route.
“We do not have to be the quickest but the best”
“The best train connection to love”
“A strange journey to the end of the world”
“There is too much hurry in the world“
In Inari, a very small town at the farthest point to the north of Finland, Hannes participates in the First International Competition for Specialists of Routes and Train Connections.
“Zugvogel” has been prized with the German Silver Bear, and the Prize of the German Critique. Peter Lohrmeyer won the golden prize as secondary actor and Frank Griebe the golden prize for best camera.“
Der Spiegel
“ ... Migratory Birds is a magical pearl of German cinema, a movie full of humor and charisma, that takes its time to develop a subversive thriller and a strange love story...”
Suddeutsche Zeitung
